Wed, September 21, 2011

Israel's political, social and economic historians have often been unaware of the possible contribution of legal history to the study of the general history of the Jewish Yishuv and the State of Israel. This unique conference was the first attempt to bring Israel's historians together to discuss the transition that occurred in 1948 from a Jewish community to a Jewish State. In exposing general historians to the work done by legal historians on the topic, the conference highlighted the importance and contribution of legal history.

Workshop on Comparative Legal Histories: Colonial/Postcolonial India and Mandatory Palestine/Israel

Mon, June 6, 2011

In recent years, an impressive body of scholarship has emerged on colonial legal history and historiography, including a subset that focuses on the Indian and Israeli experiences. Both contemporary Indian and Israeli Law are still in some sense a product of British Law. Other similarities between the countries include: a significant Muslim minority; a shared history of partition and controversy over the role of the majority's religion in the public sphere. During the workshop, these aspects were discussed in light of recent research projects on the topic. The workshop was hosted in cooperation with Stanford Law School.
