International Conference on Judging Human Rights Violations: Pondering Past and Future after Kiobel

Sun-Mon, December 15-16, 2013

The Buchmman Faculty of Law's Minerva Center for Human Rights and David Berg Foundation Institute for Law and History, and the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah hosted a panel-based conference entitled: "Judging Human Rights Violations: Pondering Past and Future after Kiobel". The two-day event included various talks and discussions focusing on the global and national legal ramifications of the Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum Co. class action trail.

 

 

10 Years Later: An Evening of Remembrance and Reflection on Prof. Leon Sheleff's Work

The Minerva Center for Human Rights and the David Berg Foundation Institute for Law and History of the Buchmann Faculty of Law, co-hosted along with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the Gershon H. Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences, a commemorative Evening in Honor of the late professor of Law and Sociology, Leon Sheleff. The public event took place at the Malka Brender Hall of Justice (Kes Hamishpat), Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law, and included remarks and speeches and remarks by professors of Tel Aviv University, from various schools and disciplines.

 

 

An Evening with Hanna Ardent

A movie screening of Hannah Arendt and lively discussion celebrating the 50th anniversary of Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil was held Thursday, November 21st at the Sonja Kossoy Conference Room (307), on the 3rd floor of the Trubowitz Building, The Buchmann Faculty of Law. The evening included commentaries by Prof. Leora Bilsky, Director of the Minerva Center for Human Rights, Prof. Shai Lavi, Director of The Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, Prof. Nathan Schneider of the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yafo (MTA) Center of Law and Business, and Dr. Idit Alphandary, Lecturer of Literature at the Interdisciplinary Program of the Arts and Women and Gender Studies Program at Tel Aviv University.

 

 

Workshop: Holocaust Class Action Litigation

The Minerva Center, along with the Faculty of Law's Institute for Continuing Legal Education and the Know It Professional Development and Training Center (Halacha Ve'Maase) hosted on Thursday, November 14th, 2013, a joint workshop on "Lessons Learned from Holocaust Class Action Litigation". The workshop took place at the auditorium of the Beit Hatfutsot, Museum of the Jewish People. Its guest-speaker Adv. Melvyn I. Weiss, the co-founder of the well-known plaintiff class action law firm Milberg Weiss, is most-prominently known for his pro bono work in obtaining over $6 billion in settlements for Holocaust victims.

 

 

"Segregated Academics": A Special Conference on the Possibility of Religious Male and Female Separation in Institutes of Higher Education

The Buchmman Facutly of Law's Minerva Center for Human Rights and the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics held a unique three-session conference on the topic of implementing segregation between the sexes in classrooms of higher education. The event, which took place on June 20th at the Kaplon Hall (209) on the 2nd floor of the Trubowicz Building, included academic lectures by professors of Law, Gender Studies, Education and Social Sciences from many of the country's leading institutions of higher learning.

 

The 13th Annual Lesbian and Gay Studies and Queer Theory Conference

May 30, 2013 - Tel Aviv University

The conference marked its 13th year as the main academic conference for queer theory and LGBT studies. It was supported by the Minerva Center for Human Rights and was held with the cooperation of the faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the faculty of the Arts. This year the conference was limited and held locally and included a panel in memory of Moran Tzafrir, a transgender student, as well as a celebratory panel on the occasion of the publishing of Dr. Amalia Ziv's latest book Sexual Thoughts (Resling, 2013).

Beyond Tirkil: a Discussion on the Gaza Flotilla Raid

Tel Aviv University, Faculty of Law Minerva Center for Human Rights held an evening discussion dedicated to the recent publication of the Tirkil Report on the 2010 Marmara flotilla raid, and in particular, to strong claims of human rights violations that have arisen by the ship's passengers. The event, which took place Thursday 18 April, 2013 at the J. Kagan Hall (Room 100), was chaired by Prof. Leora Bilsky, Director of the Minerva Center and included a keynote address by Prof. Miguel Deutch, a full-time faculty member at TAU Law and a committee member of the Tirkil Report.

 

 

Between Hebron and Sheikh Jarrah

The Minerva Center for Human Rights and the Center for the Defense of the Individual (HaMoked) held an evening lecture series entitled: "Between Hebron and Sheikh Jarrah". The event's focus was on the legal status of lands acquired by Israelis before 1948 in the West Bank (including East Jerusalem). It was chaired by the Center's Director, Prof. Leora Bilsky and included, among others, a special screening of My Neighborhood (2013), a series of short films about the constant threat of eviction Palestinian citizens of East Jerusalem face, as seen through the eyes of a teenage boy.
