Film Screening and Discussion: "Law in These Parts"

The Minerva Center for Human Rights hosted a screening and discussion on the award-winning Israeli documentary "Law in These Parts", written and directed by Ra’anan Alexandrowicz. The film, which focuses on the court system operated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the West Bank, includes interviews with numerous judges who presided over occupation-related legal cases. During the screening-event, Prof. Shai Lavi and Prof. Eyal Benvenisti of Tel Aviv University's Faculty of Law, and Prof. Yoav Dotan of the Hebrew University's Faculty of Law, all delivered lectures relating to the film.

 

 

Symposium on: Toleration as Respect

The Minerva Center for Human Rights and the Cegla Center for the Interdisciplinary Research of Law co-hosted a symposium on Toleration as Respect with guest speaker and author, Prof. Daniel Markovits of Yale Law School. The event took place Thursday, November 10th, 2011 on 17:00, at The Faculty's Sonia Kossoy Conference Room (Room 307).

 

 

International Workshop on Food Law

The Buchmann Faculty of Law's Minerva Center for Human Rights and the Paula Goldberg Research Fund in International Law hosted an international two-day workshop entitled: "Food Law: New Horizons". The workshop took place Sunday and Monday, June 12-13, 2011 at the Sonia Kossoy Conference Room (Room 307) in the Faculty's Trubowicz Building, and included guests from Columbia Law School, the University of Maryland, School of Law, Villanova University School of Law, London School of Economics, Rutgers Business School and more.

 

 

Determining the Best Interests of Children: Parental Responsibilities, Local Authorities and Family Laws

The Minerva Center for Human Rights at Tel Aviv University held a special conference devoted to discussing a new book by Dr. Mili Mass of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. The book, entitled: "In the Best Interests of the Child: Suffering and Loss in the Adoption Proceedings" focuses on the long-term problems that arise from disconnecting children from their biological parents. Guest-speakers included Dr. Aaron Fleischman, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, TAU's Prof. Adi Ophir, Dr. Daphna Hacker and more.

The 3th Dual-Year Minerva Conference for Human Rights in Israel

The Minerva Center for Human Rights in Tel Aviv University (TAU) and the Hebrew University, Jerusalem co-hosted the 4th Dual-Year Minerva Conference for Human Rights in Israel at Kibbutz Tzuba Hotel, Wednesday and Thursday, December 29-30, 2010. Conference topics included "The Relationship Between the Jewish State and its Minorities", "The Junction Between the World Economy and Human Rights", "The Impact of the Media and the Information Revolution on Human Rights", "Religion, Humanism, Humanitarianism, and Human Rights", and more.

 

 

"From Baby M to Google Baby"

The Minerva Center for Human Rights at Tel Aviv University and the International Center for Health, Law and Ethics of the Faculty of Law, Haifa University, co-hosted a special one-day conference commemorating the 15th year anniversary of the Israeli Surrogacy Law. The event took place Monday the 27th of December, 2010 at the Sonia Kossoy Conference Room (307), on the 3rd floor of the Trubowicz Building, Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law. The conference entitled: "From Baby M to Google Baby", included a panel of national experts of law, medicine, sociology, feminist jurisprudence and more.

 

 

Guest-Speaker Workshop & Symposium

The Minerva Center for Human Rights at Tel Aviv University hosted a guest-speaker workshop and symposium run by Gunther Teubner, Professor of Private Law and Legal Sociology at the University of Frankfurt. The event included three theme-based sessions on various aspects of Global Law.

 

 

Secularism, Nationalism and Human Rights: Law and Politics in the Middle East and Europe

The Israeli Law and Society Association International Conference hosted by the Buchman Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University, took place December 20-21, 2009 on the 3rd floor of the Trubowicz Building. The two-day event included a series of panels, lectures on religious-secular relations, tolerance, nationalism and human rights in the region, in general, and in Israel, in particular.

 

 

Guest Lecture by Prof. Nancy D. Polikoff (American University Washington College of Law)

The Minerva Center for Human Rights at Tel Aviv University co-hosted along with the Cegla Center for Interdisciplinary Research of the Law a theme-based lecture by Prof. Nancy D. Polikoff: "Beyond Straight and Gay Marriage". The lecture was part of the 9th annual Other Sex conference program on gay and lesbian studies in Israel and took place at the Malka Brender Hall of Justice (Kes Hamishpat), Tel Aviv University, Faculty of Law.

 

 

Israeli-Palestinian Academic Cooperation. Why Now?

The Minerva Center for Human Rights at Tel Aviv University (TAU) hosted a unique workshop dedicated to exploring new ways for fostering research and study collaborations between Israeli and Palestinian academia. The workshop was held at the Sonia Kossoy Conference Room (307) on the 3rd floor of the Trubowicz Building, Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law, and was chaired by Dr. Shai Lavi, the Co-Director of the Minerva Center at TAU's Faculty of Law.

 

 

"Address-Less": Exploring the Situation of Homeless Persons in Israel

The Minerva Center for Human Rights at Tel Aviv University (TAU) and the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), co-hosted a special conference devoted to the Israeli government's discriminating policy concerning homeless persons in Israel, and offers for resolutions. The event took place Thursday, 5th of May, 2009 at the Sonia Kossoy Conference Room (307), on the 3rd floor of the Trubowicz Building, Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law, and included a video screening of 'Cathy Come Home' (1966).

 

 

The 2nd Dual-Year Minerva Conference on Human Rights in Israel

Mon-Tue, December 8-9, 2008

The Minerva Center for Human Rights in Tel Aviv University (TAU) and the Hebrew University, Jerusalem hosted, along with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), a two-day conference on the relationship between the military and society in Israel. The event comprised a series of speeches, including a keynote speech by Prof. David Kennedy, the Faculty Director of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University.

 

 

Conference on the Employment Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Minerva Center for Human Rights in Tel Aviv University hosted, in cooperation with the Israeli Ministry of Justice, a conference entitled: "From Grace to Right: The junction of Disability, Equality and Professions". The conference was held at the Hoofien Hall, the Faculty of Law, and included three expert-led sessions of legal politicians, academics and researchers working in the field of employment and labor law.

 

 

International Workshop on Designing an Asylum System in Israel

Sun-Tue, April 6-8, 2008

An international workshop on the status of African asylum-seekers in Israel was jointly held by the Minerva Center for Human Rights in Tel Aviv University, the Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights and the Israeli Ford Foundation. The workshop entitled "Developing an Asylum System in Israel" was attended by scholars from the US, Canada and Australia, as well as government officials and human rights organizations in Israel.

 

 

Workshop Session on the Exercise of Public Authority by International Institutions

Mon-Tue, March 10-11, 2008

The Minerva Center for Human Rights in Tel Aviv University (TAU) and the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, held, in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, a two-day workshop on the Exercise of Public Authority by International Institutions. The theme-based event consisted of six guest-speaker sessions which included lectures by prominent international law researchers from Israel and Europe.

 

 

Democratic Citizenship and War Workshop

Thu-Sun, December 27-30, 2007

The Minerva Center for Human Rights in Tel Aviv University (TAU) and the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, held, along with the Marc Rich Foundation for Education, Culture and Welfare, a three-day workshop on the theoretical and practical implications of war and terror situations for citizenship in democratic states. The event was hosted by TAU's Faculty of Social Sciences, in the Naftali Building (room 527). Keynote speakers included Jean L. Cohen from the Department of Political Science at Columbia University; Raef Zreik of the The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute; Ute Frevert from Yale University, Faculty of History, and more.

 

 

Architecture and Human Rights

Commemorating the International Human Rights Month, the Minerva Center for Human Rights at Tel Aviv University held a special conference dedicated to: "The Status of Architecture and Human Rights in Israel". The conference took place at the Malka Brender Hall of Justice (Kes Hamishpat), Tel Aviv University (TAU) Faculty of Law, and included speakers from TAU, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and more.

 

 

International Humanitarian Law Guest Lecture Series

The Minerva Center for Human Rights in Jerusalem, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross held,  held an International Humanitarian Law (IHL) guest-lecture dedicated to: "The 2006 Israel Hezbollah War: The Real Reason Civilians Died". The lecture took place at the Maiersdorf Faculty Lounge (Room no. 502), Mt. Scopus Campus, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and was delivered by Col. (Reserved) Daniel Reisner, a Research Fellow of the Israel Democracy Institute and the former Head of the International Law Division in the IDF Legal Service's Corps.

 

 

The 1st Dual-Year Minerva Conference

The Minerva Center for Human Rights held a national conference dedicated to: "The Role of Israel's Shin Bet in Protecting the Country's Identity as a Jewish-Democratic State". The conference took place at the Malka Brender Hall of Justice (Kes Hamishpat), Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law, and included guest-lecturer Shai Nitzan, the Deputy Attorney General for Special Assignments, along with several of the nation's leading criminal law academics.
