The People’s University Program

The People’s University Program

A nationwide initiative, "The People's University" seeks to open the gates of universities to individuals who did not enjoy the opportunity to acquire higher education due to their socio-economic status. The student-run program, first established at TAU in 2005 by Dr. Adi Koll, has quickly spread and now operates in diffident departments of various academic institutions in Israel. So far, 9,000 participants have completed the program and over a 1,000 new participants join every year.

The program at TAU Law – the first and largest in the country - includes a year-long course which is taught by LL.B. students studying at the Faculty. The program is designed to provide participants with knowledge about the basic infrastructure of the Israeli legal system; the division of labor between different state branches (the legislative, the executive and the judiciary); rights and obligations of Israeli citizens and an introduction to contracts law, tort law, criminal law, labor law, family law and more. The program includes a tour to the Supreme Court and the Knesset, as well as meetings with prominent legal scholars and practitioners. At the end of the program, a moot trial is conducted in which the participants act as lawyers and demonstrate their skills to a panel of judges.
