The Buchmann Faculty of Law mourns the passing of Josef Buchmann z"l, Honorary Doctor of Tel Aviv University, Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors, and the man who gave the Faculty its name.
Josef z"l was fifteen years old, and an orphan, when he emerged from Bergen-Belsen after surviving the Lodz Ghetto and Auschwitz. In 1994, that same boy stood here at the Faculty on what he called the most important day of his life: the day the Faculty of Law was named for his parents, Eliezer and Chaya-Sara Buchmann z"l, who perished in the Holocaust. All he asked was that those who study here be committed to law and justice.
Josef's bond with the University spanned more than forty years: the Faculty of Law, the doctoral fellowship fund he established in the early 1980s, the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, and many years on the Board of Governors. He was an entrepreneur and a visionary who spent his life conceiving, building and leading ventures in business and philanthropy, from Frankfurt's first skyscraper to hospitals and schools. In recent decades, Josef z"l and his wife Bareket, herself an Honorary Doctor of the University, a graduate of the Faculty and a member of the Board of Governors, stood side by side in support of the Faculty and the University. Just a few months ago, the Faculty's new building opened thanks to their generosity. In a few weeks, hundreds of new students will walk through its doors on their way to their first class, joining generations of graduates who proudly call themselves "Buchmannists."
